The company also operates the Shopee e-commerce platform, a mobile-centric marketplace that provides integrated payments, logistics and fulfillment infrastructure, and other value-added services. In addition, it offers Monee digital financial services comprising consumer, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) credit, e- wallets, payment processing, banking, Insurtech, and wealth services; and acts as an underwriter for various life and non-life insurance products under the MoneeInsure tradename, as well as insurance agency services. It serves buyers, such as individuals and households; and sellers, including small and medium businesses, brands, and large retailers. The company was formerly known as Garena Interactive Holding Limited and changed its name to Sea Limited in April 2017. Sea Limited was incorporated in 2009 and is headquartered in Singapore.
What does it do?
Sea Limited is a Southeast Asian tech giant running three businesses under one roof. Its most famous product is Shopee, an app where hundreds of millions of people in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and Brazil buy everything from phone cases to groceries — think Amazon but built for mobile-first, cash-heavy emerging markets. It also runs Garena, a gaming platform best known for publishing Free Fire, one of the most downloaded mobile games in the world. Rounding it out is SeaMoney, a digital wallet and lending service for people who don't have traditional bank accounts.
Sea Limited is one of the few companies giving investors direct exposure to the rising middle class across Southeast Asia — a region of 700 million people that is urbanising and going online fast. After a brutal post-pandemic crash where its stock fell over 90% from its 2021 peak, Sea has quietly returned to profitability, which changes the whole conversation from 'can it survive?' to 'how big can it get?' At $55 billion market cap, it's priced as a major global tech company, and whether it deserves that valuation is exactly the debate investors are having right now.
How does it make money?
Sea makes money across three segments, but e-commerce is the engine. Shopee generated the bulk of Sea's $22.9 billion in revenue by charging sellers transaction fees, advertising fees, and logistics service fees — similar to how eBay or Amazon Marketplace charge third-party sellers. Garena monetises through in-game purchases and seasonal events inside Free Fire. SeaMoney earns from digital payments processing and, increasingly, interest income from small loans it extends to sellers and consumers who lack access to traditional credit.
Why do investors care?
The growth story is simple: Southeast Asia is underpenetrated across all three of Sea's businesses — e-commerce, gaming, and digital finance — and Sea has a head start. Revenue jumped from $16.8 billion to $22.9 billion in one year, a 36% increase, which tells you the addressable market is still expanding fast. For the thesis to work, Shopee needs to defend its market share against TikTok Shop, which is aggressively subsidising sellers to steal customers, and SeaMoney needs to keep growing its loan book without racking up bad debt. If both hold, Sea could compound revenue for years.
