What does it do?

Alibaba is China's version of Amazon — but bigger and more sprawling. Its apps Taobao and Tmall let hundreds of millions of Chinese shoppers buy everything from groceries to designer handbags. Beyond shopping, it runs Alibaba Cloud (think Amazon Web Services but for Asia), a logistics network, and a digital payments ecosystem through its affiliate Alipay. If you live in China, there's a good chance Alibaba touches your life multiple times a day.

Why it matters

Alibaba is one of the few companies that gives Western investors direct exposure to the Chinese consumer economy — a market of 1.4 billion people growing a middle class faster than almost anywhere else. After years of brutal crackdowns by Chinese regulators that wiped hundreds of billions off its value, the stock is trading at a steep discount to US tech peers, which is exactly why investors are paying attention again. Its AI and cloud push also makes it a bet on China's answer to the global AI race.

02

How does it make money?

Alibaba makes most of its money by charging merchants fees and commissions to sell on Taobao and Tmall — similar to how a mall charges rent. Its China e-commerce business drives the bulk of revenue, which hit roughly 1 trillion RMB (around $140B USD) in its latest fiscal year. Alibaba Cloud is the second engine, selling computing power and AI tools to businesses across Asia. Smaller bets include international e-commerce (AliExpress, Lazada) and logistics arm Cainiao.

03

Why do investors care?

The bull story is simple: Alibaba is a world-class tech company trading at a fraction of what a US equivalent would cost — its price-to-earnings ratio (how much investors pay per dollar of profit) is dramatically lower than Amazon or Microsoft. China's consumer recovery post-COVID, a government that has signalled it's done attacking its own tech giants, and a serious push into AI cloud services all give the stock potential tailwinds. For this to work, China's economy needs to keep recovering, regulators need to stay hands-off, and Alibaba's cloud business needs to scale.
