What does it do?
Dentsply Sirona makes pretty much everything you'd find in a dentist's office — from the chair you sit in, to the X-ray machine, to the drills and tools the dentist uses on your teeth. They also make braces, dental implants (artificial tooth roots), and the software that connects all this equipment together. Think of them as the behind-the-scenes supplier that keeps dental practices running around the world. They even have a small healthcare division that makes catheters used in urology.
Dentsply is one of the largest dental equipment companies in the world, operating in a $50+ billion global dental market that tends to be resilient — people always need dental care. Right now investors are watching closely because the company has been through a rough patch, posting a $600 million loss last year, and a new leadership team is trying to turn things around. Whether they can stop the bleeding and return to growth is one of the most watched stories in healthcare right now.
How does it make money?
Dentsply makes money across four main buckets. The biggest is 'Essential Dental Solutions' — think everyday consumables like fillings, crowns, and anesthetics that dentists reorder constantly, which provides reliable recurring revenue. They also sell expensive imaging machines and treatment chairs through their 'Connected Technology Solutions' segment. A third segment covers orthodontic products (like clear aligners) and dental implants, which is a high-growth but competitive area. Finally, their 'Wellspect Healthcare' unit sells catheters in Europe. Total revenue was $3.7 billion last year, down from $3.8 billion the prior year.
Why do investors care?
The bull case here is a classic turnaround story — the stock is down roughly 75% from its peak, which means if management can fix operations and return to profitability, early investors could see big gains. The dental market itself is growing, driven by aging populations globally who need more dental work and rising demand for cosmetic procedures like aligners and implants. For this to work, Dentsply needs to cut costs, stop losing market share in implants to competitors like Straumann, and actually deliver on its digital dentistry strategy. New CEO Simon Campion, who took over in late 2023, is the key person to watch.
