The Proprietary Products segment offers stoppers and seals for injectable packaging systems; syringe and cartridge components, including custom solutions for the needs of injectable drug applications, as well as administration systems that enhance the safe delivery of drugs through advanced reconstitution, mixing, and transfer technologies; and films, coatings, washing, and vision inspection and sterilization processes and services to enhance the quality of packaging products. This segment also provides drug containment solutions in the form of vials, syringes, and cartridges; and self-injection devices; and a range of integrated solutions, including analytical lab services, pre-approval primary packaging support and engineering development, regulatory expertise, and after-sales technical support. This segment serves biologic, generic, and pharmaceutical drug companies. The Contract-Manufactured Products segment is involved in the design, manufacture, and automated assembly of devices used in surgical, diagnostic, ophthalmic, injectable, and other drug delivery systems, as well as consumer products. 01

What does it do?

West Pharmaceutical Services makes the tiny but critical components that keep injectable drugs safe — think the rubber stoppers on vaccine vials, the plastic caps on insulin cartridges, and the mechanisms inside auto-injector pens like EpiPens. If you have ever received a vaccine or used a prefilled syringe, you have almost certainly used one of their parts. They do not make the drugs themselves — they make the packaging and delivery hardware that drug companies depend on. It is an unglamorous but essential piece of the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Why it matters

Every injectable drug on the market needs containment and delivery components, which means West is tied to one of the most durable spending categories in healthcare. With biologics — complex injectable drugs like Ozempic and cancer therapies — growing faster than traditional pills, demand for West's high-value components is structurally rising. Investors care right now because the GLP-1 drug boom (think weight-loss injections) is driving a wave of new drug delivery device demand that West is well-positioned to capture.

02

How does it make money?

West makes money across two segments. The larger one, Proprietary Products, sells branded stoppers, seals, and drug delivery systems directly to pharmaceutical companies — this is the high-margin business that drove $3.1 billion in total revenue in the latest year, up from $2.9 billion the prior year. The second segment, Contract-Manufactured Products, manufactures components designed by other companies, which is lower margin but adds volume. Their highest-value items are 'HVP' components — high-value products with special coatings that prevent contamination — and these command premium prices because drug makers need them to meet strict regulatory standards.

03

Why do investors care?

The core growth story is that injectable drugs are winning. More new drugs are delivered by injection than by pill, and complex biologics require more sophisticated — and more expensive — containment solutions. West has long-term supply agreements with major pharma companies, which means revenue is sticky and predictable. For the thesis to work, biologics and GLP-1 drug volumes need to keep growing, and West needs to keep pushing customers toward its premium, higher-margin product lines.
