What does it do?

Travelers is one of the largest insurance companies in America. If you own a home, run a small business, or drive a company vehicle, there's a real chance Travelers is the company that would pay out if something went wrong. They cover everything from warehouse fires and car accidents to cybercrime and construction lawsuits. Think of them as a giant financial safety net — businesses and individuals pay them regular fees, and Travelers promises to cover the bill if disaster strikes.

Why it matters

Insurance companies are having a moment right now. Years of rising premiums — driven by inflation, extreme weather, and surging repair costs — are finally flowing into record profits. Travelers just posted $6.3 billion in net income, a dramatic jump that shows how powerful pricing power can be in this industry. With climate-related disasters becoming more frequent, the ability to price risk accurately and raise premiums accordingly is worth a lot to investors.

02

How does it make money?

Travelers makes money in two main ways. First, it collects premiums — regular payments from customers in exchange for insurance coverage. With $43.9 billion in revenue (up from $41.9 billion the prior year), premiums are the engine of the business. Second, it invests the money it collects before any claims are paid out — this float generates significant investment income, typically from bonds. When claims are lower than expected and investment returns are strong, profits soar, which is exactly what happened recently.

03

Why do investors care?

Investors like Travelers because it sits in a sweet spot: it has the scale to absorb big losses and the pricing power to raise premiums when risks increase. The growth story is tied to a 'hard market' — industry jargon for a period when insurers can charge more because competition has pulled back after big losses. Travelers has also been disciplined about walking away from bad risks, which protects its profit margins. For this story to keep working, the company needs claims to stay manageable and interest rates to stay elevated so its investment portfolio keeps earning.
