What does it do?

RPM International makes the specialty chemicals and coatings that hold buildings together — think waterproofing systems for flat rooftops, the sealant that fills gaps around your windows, and the industrial floor coating in a factory warehouse. Their consumer brands include Rust-Oleum paint, the spray can you'd grab at a hardware store to fix a rusty gate. They also make products used by professional contractors on large commercial and residential construction projects. Basically, if something needs to be sealed, coated, or protected from weather and wear, RPM probably makes a product for it.

Why it matters

With aging infrastructure across North America and Europe, demand for maintenance, repair, and waterproofing products is structurally growing — buildings don't stop needing upkeep. RPM sits at the intersection of construction activity and the massive renovation market, both of which are being supported by federal spending like the U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. For investors, RPM is a way to bet on the physical world getting fixed up, without having to pick a single contractor or homebuilder.

02

How does it make money?

RPM generates $7.4 billion in annual revenue split across four business segments. The Construction Products Group (CPG) and Performance Coatings Group (PCG) serve professional contractors with high-margin specialty products like roofing systems and industrial coatings. The Consumer segment sells recognizable retail brands like Rust-Oleum through hardware stores and home improvement retailers like Home Depot. The Specialty Products Group (SPG) rounds out the mix with niche products for markets like wood finishing and recreation. Revenue grew modestly from $7.3 billion the prior year, and net income came in at $0.7 billion, showing a reasonably profitable operation.

03

Why do investors care?

RPM is interesting to investors because it combines stable, repeat-purchase demand — buildings always need maintenance — with a portfolio of well-known brands that give it pricing power. The company has been running a multi-year internal improvement program called MAP 2025, focused on cutting costs and improving margins, which has been delivering results. If construction activity picks up as interest rates eventually ease, RPM's professional segments could see a meaningful boost. The key thing that has to go right: housing and commercial construction activity needs to recover, and RPM needs to keep expanding margins rather than just growing revenue.
