What does it do?
Rubrik helps companies protect their data from ransomware attacks and accidental deletion. Think of it like a highly secure backup system — if a hacker locks up a hospital's files and demands money, Rubrik helps the hospital restore everything quickly without paying. It also monitors data around the clock to spot threats before they cause damage. Their newest product, an AI assistant called RUBY, helps security teams automate responses to cyber threats.
Ransomware attacks hit a record high in 2024 and show no sign of slowing down, making data backup and recovery one of the fastest-growing areas in cybersecurity. Companies can no longer treat data protection as optional — regulators and insurers now require it. Rubrik sits right at the center of this urgent, non-negotiable spending trend.
How does it make money?
Rubrik makes almost all of its money through subscriptions — companies pay an annual or multi-year fee to use its software, which means revenue is predictable and sticky. Revenue jumped from $0.9 billion to $1.3 billion in the latest year, a roughly 44% increase. The company sells to large enterprises, government agencies, and cloud-heavy businesses, often through multi-year contracts that are expensive to cancel. It does not yet turn a profit, losing around $300 million last year, but that loss is largely driven by heavy investment in sales and product development.
Why do investors care?
The growth story is simple: cyber attacks are getting worse, and every large organisation on earth needs a solution like Rubrik's. Investors are betting that Rubrik can keep compounding its revenue at a high rate while gradually improving profitability as it scales. For that to happen, the company needs to keep winning large enterprise deals, expand within existing customers, and prove that RUBY and its AI features justify premium pricing. If it can move from fast-growing to fast-growing and profitable, the stock could look cheap at today's price.
