What does it do?
Imperial Brands is one of the world's largest tobacco companies, selling cigarettes and tobacco products across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. You've probably seen their brands without knowing it — think Davidoff cigarettes, Golden Virginia rolling tobacco, or Winston smokes. They're also pushing into newer nicotine products like vapes and nicotine pouches, similar to what you'd see on a pharmacy shelf next to the gum. In short, they make and sell things people buy repeatedly, often every single day.
Tobacco companies are back in focus for investors who want reliable income — Imperial Brands pays a hefty dividend (a cash payment to shareholders), making it attractive when interest rates eventually fall and income-generating stocks become more appealing. The company is also at a crossroads that the whole industry faces: cigarette volumes are slowly declining globally, so the race to build a next-generation nicotine business is existential, not optional. How well Imperial executes that shift will define its relevance over the next decade.
How does it make money?
Imperial Brands makes almost all of its $9.8 billion in revenue by selling tobacco and nicotine products to distributors and retailers, who then sell them to consumers. Their core cigarette brands — sold in markets like the UK, Germany, Spain, and the US — generate the bulk of profits because tobacco carries extremely high margins (meaning the cost to make a cigarette is a tiny fraction of what it sells for). They also earn from 'next-generation products' like vapes and heated tobacco devices, though this segment is still growing and not yet the main engine. Net income came in at $2.1 billion, meaning they kept about 21 cents of profit for every dollar of revenue — a sign of how lucrative the underlying business remains.
Why do investors care?
The bull story on Imperial Brands isn't really about growth — it's about cash. The company generates enormous amounts of free cash (money left over after running the business and investing in it), which it uses to pay dividends and buy back its own shares. For investors, that's a reliable income stream in a world where savings accounts often disappoint. The secondary story is a turnaround: under current management, Imperial has been simplifying its brand portfolio and investing more aggressively in vapes, which could give it a foothold in the future of nicotine. If they can stabilize cigarette revenues while growing next-gen products, the company could quietly compound value for years.
