IDEX Corporation
IDEX Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, provides applied solutions in the United States, North America, Europe, Asia, and internationally. It operates through three segments: Health & Science Technologies (HST), Fluid & Metering Technologies (FMT) and Fire & Safety/Diversified Products (FSDP). The HST segment designs, produces, and distributes a range of precision fluidics, positive displacement pumps, powder and liquid processing technologies, drying systems, micro-precision components, pneumatic components and sealing solutions, high performance molded and extruded sealing components, and custom mechanical and shaft seals. This segment also offers engineered hygienic mixers and valves, biocompatible medical devices and implantable products, air compressors and blowers, optical components and coatings, ultra-precision diamond tools, and laboratory and commercial equipment, as well as precision photonic solutions, technical ceramics, hermetic sealing products, porous material structures, and flow control solutions. The FMT segment designs, produces, and distributes positive displacement pumps, valves, small volume provers, flow meters, injectors, other fluid-handling pump modules, and systems; and provides flow monitoring and other services. The FSDP segment designs, produces, and distributes firefighting pumps, valves and controls, and rescue tools; lifting bags and other components and systems; engineered stainless steel banding and clamping devices; and precision equipment for dispensing, metering, and mixing colorants and paints. The company was incorporated in 1987 and is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois.
What does it do?
IDEX Corporation makes the pumps, valves, and flow-control systems that move liquids and gases in very precise amounts — think of them as the plumbing experts for industries where getting the measurement exactly right is critical. For example, their equipment helps dialysis machines deliver the exact right amount of fluid to patients, and their fire suppression systems protect everything from oil rigs to data centers. They sell to hospitals, pharmaceutical factories, food processors, and fire departments. You probably never see their products, but they're working quietly inside equipment you rely on every day.
IDEX sits at the intersection of several long-term spending trends — life sciences, water infrastructure, and industrial automation — all of which are receiving increased government and private investment right now. Their products are highly specialized, which means customers rarely switch suppliers, giving IDEX a defensible business that holds up even when the economy slows. With a $17 billion market cap and steady profitability, it's the kind of company institutional investors treat as a core industrial holding.
How does it make money?
IDEX makes money through three business segments. Fluid & Metering Technologies (FMT) sells pumps and meters used in water treatment, agriculture, and chemical processing. Health & Science Technologies (HST) — the fastest-growing piece — makes precision equipment for life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Fire & Safety/Diversified Products (FSDP) sells firefighting equipment and specialty dispensing tools. Revenue grew from $3.3 billion to $3.5 billion in the latest year, and the company converted roughly $500 million of that into net profit, showing strong pricing power.
Why do investors care?
The bull case for IDEX rests on the idea that highly specialized, hard-to-replace industrial components command premium prices and sticky customers — meaning once someone builds your pump into their machine, they keep reordering from you. The HST segment is the growth engine, riding the wave of biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion globally. For the thesis to play out, IDEX needs to keep acquiring niche businesses at sensible prices and continue expanding margins in life sciences. Investors also like that the company has consistently grown its dividend, rewarding long-term holders.
