What does it do?

A. O. Smith makes the water heaters sitting in most American basements — the big tank that gives you a hot shower every morning. They also make commercial versions for hotels, hospitals, and restaurants, plus water purification systems. Think of them as the behind-the-scenes infrastructure company that almost every building in North America depends on. They're also a major player in China and India, selling water heaters and filtration products to a growing middle class.

Why it matters

Water heaters are a replacement-driven business — roughly 13 million are replaced in the US every year just because old ones break down, regardless of the economy. That makes A. O. Smith more resilient than companies that depend on people feeling confident enough to spend. Right now, investors are watching whether the company's push into water treatment and emerging markets like India can add a new growth layer on top of that steady replacement base.

02

How does it make money?

A. O. Smith generates its roughly $3.8 billion in annual revenue across two main segments: North America and Rest of World. The North America business — which is the larger chunk — sells residential and commercial water heaters and boilers through big-box retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's, as well as through plumbing wholesalers and contractors. The Rest of World segment, primarily China and India, sells water heaters and water treatment/purification products directly to consumers and through retail channels. Net income came in around $500 million last year, reflecting solid profit margins for an industrial company.

03

Why do investors care?

The bull story here is really two ideas stacked together. First, there's the rock-solid US replacement cycle — people don't skip replacing a broken water heater, which means revenue holds up even in downturns. Second, there's the longer-term bet on India, where a rising middle class is buying water heaters and filtration systems for the first time, offering genuine growth that the mature US market can't provide. For both stories to work, the China business — which has been under pressure — needs to stabilize, and the India segment needs to keep scaling fast enough to matter.
