What does it do?

Align Technology makes Invisalign — those clear plastic trays that straighten teeth instead of metal braces. If you've ever seen someone quietly pop a retainer out before eating, that's likely an Invisalign aligner. The company also makes iTero scanners, which are the 3D digital cameras dentists and orthodontists use to scan your mouth instead of making you bite into that goopy mold. Think of Align as the company that turned orthodontics from a metal-and-wire experience into something almost invisible.

Why it matters

Invisalign has become the default brand name in clear aligners — like Kleenex for tissues — which gives Align enormous pricing power in a market that is still far from fully penetrated globally. Only a small fraction of the 500+ million people worldwide who need orthodontic treatment actually get it, meaning the runway for growth is still very long. With dentists and orthodontists increasingly shifting to digital workflows, Align's scanner business also puts it at the center of a broader tech transformation in dental care.

How does it make money?

Align makes money in two main ways. First and biggest is its Clear Aligner segment — doctors order Invisalign treatment packages for their patients, and Align charges per case, with prices ranging roughly from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars per case depending on complexity. Second is its Systems and Services segment, which sells and leases iTero intraoral scanners to dental practices and charges ongoing service fees. With $4 billion in annual revenue, the aligner business is the dominant earner, but the scanner business matters because every iTero scanner installed is essentially a sales funnel that makes it easier for doctors to prescribe Invisalign.

Why do investors care?

The core growth story is global expansion — most of Align's growth opportunity lies outside the US, particularly in underpenetrated markets like China, Latin America, and Southeast Asia where orthodontic treatment rates are still very low. Investors are also watching whether Align can push Invisalign deeper into the general dentist channel, not just specialists, which would massively expand the number of providers prescribing it. For the thesis to work, macroeconomic pressure on consumer spending needs to ease, since Invisalign is often an elective, out-of-pocket expense that consumers cut back on when budgets tighten. A continued recovery in case volumes after a post-COVID demand slowdown is the key near-term signal.
