What does it do?

Arch Capital is a Bermuda-based insurance and reinsurance company — meaning it sells protection policies to both everyday businesses and to other insurance companies. Think of it this way: when a massive hurricane hits Florida, local insurers pay out claims, but they'd go broke without a backstop. Arch is often that backstop. It also runs a mortgage insurance business, which protects lenders if homeowners stop paying their mortgages.

Why it matters

Insurance companies like Arch are in a golden moment right now — after years of catastrophic losses from hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, the industry has sharply raised the prices it charges for coverage, making policies far more profitable. Arch is one of the best-run players in this 'hard market' cycle, and investors are paying close attention to how long the good times last. With a $32 billion market cap, it's big enough to matter but still nimble enough to grow.

02

How does it make money?

Arch makes money in two main ways: collecting premiums (the regular payments customers make for coverage) and investing that cash before any claims come in. It brought in $16.5 billion in revenue last year, up from $15.7 billion the year before — a sign it's writing more business at higher prices. Its net income hit $4.4 billion, which is a very healthy profit margin for an insurer and reflects both disciplined underwriting and strong investment returns.

03

Why do investors care?

The growth story here is a combination of pricing power and smart expansion. Arch has been able to charge more for the same coverage because disasters have made competitors more cautious — fewer players willing to take on risk means Arch can set better terms. Its mortgage insurance segment also benefits when the housing market stays stable. For the thesis to work, Arch needs to keep avoiding catastrophic losses, maintain its pricing edge, and not get caught flat-footed by a megadisaster year.
